Make Beauty your Business! Why a career with MyShowcase has no 'gloss' ceiling!

If you love the idea of mixing business, beauty and pleasure - then signing up with MyShowcase (MYSC) as a Stylist may be the best career move you make.

Named as one of The Sunday Times’ fastest growing businesses in the UK, DSA Excellence Award Winner MYSC offers a premium, bespoke personal beauty shopping service through their network of Independent Stylists and online featuring the best independent brands in beauty curated by award-winning beauty expert Kate Shapland.

Their mission? To give every woman the means to make her life a little more beautiful, creating career flexibility whilst closing the confidence gap for women.

Signing up as a Stylist starts from just £99.00 and you’ll receive a fabulous beauty kit, free support and the chance to earn between 15-30% commission on all products you sell at your Showcase and online. Earning capacity depends entirely on you, the more you do, the more you earn.

Gill Shaw signed up with MYSC in July 2015 and is now a National Stylist Director. Her passion for the brand is truly inspiring and we asked her to share her career journey and what makes MYSC a 'beauty-licious' place to work!

How did your career in beauty start?

I’ve worked in the industry since I was 15; starting as a Saturday girl in my local Miss Selfridge covering for breaks on the makeup counter. After school I studied a 2 year basic hairdressing and beauty culture course (mani, pedi and makeup then I went on to do a further year long course studying Beauty Therapy, Business Studies and Advanced Hairdressing.

How did you get your first career break?

Around this time, I won several makeup competitions – this led to some work in London doing makeup for album covers, hair shows and product launches. I designed two make up looks that were used in magazines and on all the Mary Quant counters in the UK and globally!

I also got offered my job back in Miss Selfridge to work on THAT makeup counter back in my home city and jumped at the chance. I quickly progressed into Senior Management – recruiting and encouraging new consultants along with store management.

Who else have you worked with in your beauty career?

I’ve worked in a management capacity with the Body Shop, The Virgin Cosmetics Company and Temple Spa as Sales Director where my role was to develop the direct sales business and I remained there until June 2015.

What was your inspiration for joining MYSC?

When I left Temple Spa I was looking for a new opportunity – it wasn’t about money or position at that time, but about me, where I was in my life and a lifestyle change.

With MYSC, I instantly saw the opportunity to use all my skills from previous roles and businesses – I took delivery of my Stylist starter kit and booked my first Showcase in 2 weeks later!

I ordered a range of skincare I thought would suit me best (so I wasn’t tempted to use my kit!) and changed everything in my make up bag too so that contained all things MYSC.

How did your first Showcase go?

It was a very successful at home Saturday afternoon Showcase and I managed to book 5 Showcases from that launch event at my own home and I really have never looked back.

I set myself a monthly goal sales wise, sponsoring wise (empowering others to join us) and future bookings wise and I always try and book 2 Showcases from each that go ahead. Inevitably you do get changes to your diary as life is life, but usually they re-date. As I’ve never met a woman yet who has enough lipstick or wants to run out of her favourite moisturiser!

What do you love about working for MYSC?

I love the fact that it’s a multibrand! We are truly blessed to have so many award winning products at our fingertips – as a product junkie this is my idea of heaven!

There are no ceilings on what I can earn, no more salary guarantees but also not the pressures or expectations.

I love the people involved in the business- their credentials in the beauty industry are second to none – Kate Shapland as beauty and product curator, Nancy Cruickshank as CEO, Rodridgo and Olivier - our boys behind the scenes are quite incredible at making this “MYSC machine” just tick!

Briefly what type of support and training can a Stylist expect with MYSC?

I use our amazing online training guide “GENIE” which every MYSC stylist has access too. It’s our very own training app that we can download onto our smart phones and iPads and tap into at anytime we want information. It contains training videos of how to showcase, product training, how to order products, best sellers etc.

Everyone gets amazing access and support from Head Office who truly are a network and who offer assistance every step of the way. We also have the most incredible Stylist Hub which is updated constantly and again contains information you can take on board as and when you need to. We have monthly Brand Training in Birmingham and London where the brands and products we work alongside and with train us face to face. I wouldn’t miss these for the world…so amazing to see these incredibly inspiring people up close and personal!

We have weekly brand phone/zoom calls – where the actual brand founders themselves give up their time to train us on their products and brand. There is weekly access to Nancy too again via conference/zoom calls to chat through changes in the business and recognition, incentives. We also have a Private Manager page on Facebook and a Stylist Forum on Facebook too; again so we can tap into information or ask questions if needed.

We also have a monthly newsletter called Me Myshowcase, which again are full of information we need for the month ahead, testimonials, recognition, incentives and promotions.

Share a few of your MYSC highlights so far…

So many already spring to mind but here’s few…!

  • Meeting the founders and the Head Office team last July, they just made me feel so, so welcome and supported.
  • Earning the chance to have lunch with Amanda Connock (From Connock London) at The Wolsey and receiving a huge basket of products and Christmas goodies too
  • 100’s of £’s of products for FREE! And I mean 100’s!!!
  • Winning numerous national awards for personal, team and total business sales and personal sponsoring (my business has over 100 stylists now).
  • In Sept ‘16 being rewarded with product vouchers for being Top in the business for make up sales – I didn’t realize how much I had missed make-up until it came back into my life; I love being able to change someone’s look, increase their confidence, make them look younger or give them a special look for their special occasion whether that’s a wedding, prom or anniversary!

So for someone considering a leap of faith with MYSC what advice would you give?

Even if you have not done anything like this before, get involved; it fits into your spare time! I have people in my business who work in full and part time roles and MYSC fits in around those commitments and I’ve also stylists where MYSC is their sole income just like me! You don’t have to come from beauty or make up or sales background and you certainly don’t have to have experience in selling socially, which is what we are doing.

Some of your fave MYSC products are…

  • Connock London range of fragrance – perfume, bath and shower oil radiant glow body oil, reed diffuser
  • Aurelia skincare- miracle cleanser, night oil, day moisturizer and hand cream
  • BBrow bar Eyebrow powder in Cinnamon Spice
  • La Montana “scents of Spain” candles – the house is covered in them!
  • Nanshy Make Up Brushes- cruelty free, Vegan, endorsed by Bianca Jagger

So where next with your MYSC career?

I hold the title of National Sales Director and I am aiming for the next career title, which should happen early next year latest. I want to help others within my business to develop their skills and income and hopefully build their own teams and business as I have.

It’s an amazing opportunity to have your own beauty business with massive benefits! And with a support network that is second to none, there really isn’t another opportunity like this out there!
