Career Insider: Amanda Thomson Co-Founder, Skinny Champagne
Amanda Thomson is the passionate figurehead for Skinny Champagne - the No Sugar Grand Cru Champagne.
Amanda, we love the concept for Skinny Champagne - how did the creation of the brand come about?
I grew up on a no sugar, vegetarian diet as a child with a health food entrepreneur mother who was way ahead of her time. I forged a career as an arts broadcaster but always dreamt of working with Champagne. When I started to learn just how much sugar was added to most Champagne and sparkling wine - and importantly, that no one outside the wine world knew this - the seed of a business idea was formed.
I persuaded my husband that we take our children to live in Paris where I studied wine, travelled the vineyards and, after finding the best no added sugar Champagne, persuaded its celebrated maker to let me brand it in a wholly radical fashion.
Skinny Champagne Grand Cru is now the initial positioning bottle in what will become a portfolio of top quality no and low sugar sparkling wine at different price points, under my Skinny Fizz brand.
What is your philosophy and how does the brand reflect this?
Health without compromise. Isn’t that everyone’s holy grail? I hope the brand reflects that. And importantly there’s a sense of fun in there too somewhere. After all, this is Champagne we’re talking about.
You have a keen interest in healthy living - tell us about your own nutrition, do you follow a particular type of diet?
I’m a life-long vegetarian and love vegan food though I can’t help giving in to runny, ripe French cheese. I don’t think I would have survived in Paris if I didn’t eat goat’s cheese.
About the only thing without a face on a menu there normally is salad au chèvre. Thanks to me Le Cordon Bleu Paris started offering short vegetarian courses. The lovely chefs gave in to me eventually. It’s likely they got bored of me nagging them about it.
Do you have an opinion on Jamie Oliver's proposed sugar tax on fizzy drinks?
Fantastic idea. And not before time.
You are developing a fast growing reputation as an entrepreneur - to date, what are your biggest achievements both personally and professionally?
Gosh, tough question. I’m a typically self-deprecating Brit so not one to pat myself on the back. Perhaps personally, managing to still be happily married and have fun with my children despite such a single-minded focus on my business.
Professionally. I guess the fact that I remain convinced that I will grow this business globally into a household name brand and that now people are starting to believe me so I must be doing something right.
Work-life balance - do you find it easy to switch off?
Rarely. I think it’s an oxymoron for an entrepreneur - though yoga is good I find. And importantly, if you believe in what you do and are as obsessed to the point where I am, your work merges into your life.
That said, I do bore myself sometimes with my mantra! But I can’t stop ‘til Skinny Champagne is served all over the world.
What's your fail-safe beauty or health product?
Acupuncture and Reishi mushrooms from my Chinese practitioner who’s my guru. He was even at my last birth! Oh and I love my NutriBullet.
What's next for Skinny Champagne?
How much time have you got?! We’re changing drinking habits one bottle at a time.
